Ethiopia’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Yoseph Kassaye, made that statement when speaking at the 28th plenary session of the General Assembly, at the beginning of debates on the Resolution entitled “Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade of the United States of America against Cuba.”

Kassaye noted that the enforcement of this extraterritorial measure has had serious consequences for the Cuban people and poses a pressing challenge for the government in its efforts to achieve sustainable development, especially as part of the 2030 Agenda.

“These measures continue to obstruct the progress of the Cuban economy, creating obstacles to its participation in international trade and finance. The pressure on the economy is exacerbated by other international challenges to development such as the consequences of climate change,” he added.

He stressed that what is even more worrying is the fact that the blockade has not changed and for more than 30 years the international community has been calling for its end.

“Every year we see overwhelming support for the people and Government of Cuba. The majority of member States have been reaffirming the necessity to have the blockade lifted,” he stressed.

The diplomat stated that Addis Ababa has systematically signed that call and reiterated the position that the unilateral policy must be lifted quickly.

Ethiopia maintains the firm position that Cuba should be given the necessary support and cooperation to overcome its development challenges.
