In a message published on his X account, the president mentioned the tribute that Cubans pay to Camilo Cienfuegos, also known as the Hero of Yaguajay, and highlighted his patriotism, his desire for justice and his absolute loyalty to the Revolution and Fidel Castro.
Díaz-Canel also recalled statements from the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, about the transcendental figure of Camilo Cienfuegos.
“#FidelPorSiempre: Camilo came from the people, he had the opportunity to enhance and develop his extraordinary abilities; but when I see our young people at the foot of a lathe, (…), when I see them in a laboratory, when I see them working 10, 12, 13 and 14 hours, I am more and more confirmed in that deep conviction that there are many Camilos in the people,” he wrote.
Prime Minister Manuel Marrero stressed that love for Cuba and loyalty to Fidel Castro and the Revolution by the Hero of Yaguajay are examples for the new generations.
Camilo Cienfuegos (1932-1959) was linked from a young age to the Cuban revolutionary process as one of the fundamental pillars of the feat that overthrew the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista.
During the fighting stage, he was a member of the Granma yacht expedition, commander of the Rebel Army and one of the leaders of the invasion to the West.
His friendship with Ernesto Che Guevara made him an inseparable companion of the Cuban-Argentine guerrilla.
After the victory on January 1, 1959, Camilo Cienfuegos was appointed Chief of Staff of the Rebel Army, a position in which he was in charge of the arrest of the deserter Hubert Matos after an attempted uprising in the central-eastern province of Camagüey.
On his return, the plane on which he was traveling to Havana disappeared in the middle of a storm.
To commemorate him, the Cuban people and, in particular, children, throw flowers into the sea and rivers as a tribute to his life and work.
