Camilo Cienfuegos, in the memory and heart of Cuba

Havana, Oct 28 (Prensa Latina) Cuba still mourns the disappearance of Camilo Cienfuegos in a plane crash while returning from Camagüey to Havana 65 years ago today. But since death is a fact only when it is forgotten, it still beats, lives, smiles, jokes, especially in the heart of a generation that looks for him with the ambition of snatching him from the sea.

Although it may seem a paradox, for Cubans the mourning over the death of Camilo Cienfuegos did not end, it does not end, it will never end, and at the same time they feel him alive, as if the sad news of 1959 had never been true.

And this Monday, as every October 28, when the month and years begin to agonize, Cuba clings to those and many other sentiments and pays homage to the Commander of the Rebel Army, the Lord of the Vanguard, the Hero of Yaguajay.

Thousands of anecdotes and feats in his short 27 years, the wide-brimmed hat over the smile and the beard, will fill evocations during a day in which students, workers and seniors will pilgrimage to coasts and rivers to deposit flowers.

Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán was born on February 6, 1932 in Lawton, Havana, into a family with much more dignity than fortune.
