Image of former British Queen will be replaced in Caribbean currency

Baseterre, Oct 27 (Prensa Latina) The Central Bank of the Eastern Caribbean is working on a project to place the faces of 10 local personalities on the regional currency, replacing the image of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The bank plans to redesign the East Caribbean 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar banknotes to incorporate the images of two prominent figures from the region in each of them.

It is still unknown who the chosen personalities will be, but the plan is to put the money into circulation by the end of 2027.

In July last year, the Bank’s Monetary Council agreed to change the design of the banknotes for decades, and the move was interpreted as an act to strengthen its identity as a financial institution and at the same time reduce colonial ties with the former metropolis.

The East Caribbean dollar first circulated on October 6, 1965, replacing the then British West Indies dollar.
