Guatemalan newspaper calls Cuba blockade inhumane

Guatemala City, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) An op-ed column published today by the Guatemalan newspaper La Hora described as “inhumane” the blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than 62 years. Signed by Factor Méndez, the column stresses that the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) has been convened to assess the issue next week, on October 29 and 30, 2024.

On that occasion the UN forum it will reassess and vote for the thirty-second time the draft resolution under the title “Necessity to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” he added.

According to the columnist, Assembly plenary will most probably vote overwhelimingly against the sanctions imposed on Cuba.

After 62 years of obstructing the island’s trade relations, of tightening the embargo and blockade, the goal of destabilizing and overthrowing the Cuban regime has not prospered, the experienced reporter stressed.

The people and the Government have resisted and continue to resist, despite the adverse consequences for the State and the population, he asserted.

Méndez estimates in 150 billion dollars the damages incurred by the US blockade on Cuba, a policy that – he adds – violates human rights.

The economic, commercial, financial and political embargo against Cuba, imposed by the US Government on February 7, 1962, must end, Méndez urged.

The unilateral imposition decreed by President John F. Kennedy in application of the Foreign Aid Law approved in 1961, turns 63 in 2024 without achieving the objective that brought it to life, he emphasized.

The objective – he insisted – was to cut the commercial ties of Cuba and the United States, to provoke the overthrow of the revolutionary Government and create conditions of desperation among the population.

The Democratic administration of Joe Biden still maintains the 243 restrictive measures imposed by the Government of Donald Trump (2017-2021), among them the inclusion of Cuba as a country that allegedly sponsors terrorism.
