Commander of Ugandan armed group faces the full weight of the law

Kampala, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) Found guilty of crimes against humanity, murder, rape, and looting, a former commander of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) was sentenced to 40 years in prison by a Ugandan court, according to a verdict released today.

The defendant, Thomas Kwoyelo, whose record covers 44 counts, asked the court for clemency but was denied, according to reports of the trial, which was entrusted to the International Crimes Division of the Supreme Court.

Since the beginning of its activities in 1987, the LRA, which has continued its attacks, has been characterized as an extremist Christian movement and has been credited with the abduction and recruitment of more than 50,000 Ugandan minors of both sexes to be used as hired assassins and subjected to sexual slavery.
