The defendant, Thomas Kwoyelo, whose record covers 44 counts, asked the court for clemency but was denied, according to reports of the trial, which was entrusted to the International Crimes Division of the Supreme Court.
Since the beginning of its activities in 1987, the LRA, which has continued its attacks, has been characterized as an extremist Christian movement and has been credited with the abduction and recruitment of more than 50,000 Ugandan minors of both sexes to be used as hired assassins and subjected to sexual slavery.
