During the meeting, the Ethiopian head of government expressed his gratitude to Putin for the warm welcome given by the Russian side to the African delegation and congratulated him for the success of the event held from October 22nd to 24th in the city of Kazan. He also highlighted Russia’s economic resilience amid pressures, and stressed Ethiopia’s commitment to improving relations with Russia in the economic, diplomatic and security spheres.
In turn, the Russian president commented that Ethiopia’s membership in the BRICS group, effective as of January 1st, is an important step that reaffirms the nation’s authority in the international arena, and stated that Russia will continue to promote the harmonious integration of Ethiopia in the work of the bloc. “Last year we celebrated the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Ethiopia, which is why we share a rich history of friendship and mutual respect, as well as cultural and historical closeness of our two peoples,” he said.
Putin acknowledged that during 2023 there was a constant improvement in ties between both countries and diplomatic missions. “Our positions on most issues on the global agenda are close, very aligned,” he said, and appreciated that Ethiopia supports many of Russia’s initiatives in the UN and focuses a lot on its relations with African countries.
Moscow will hold the first conference of foreign ministers with African states in November, Putin added, announcing that the Speaker of the Russian Federation Council, Valentina Matveyenko, will visit Addis Ababa to oversee the process.
The Russian president expressed willingness to further enhance the bilateral partnership in the pharmaceutical sector and other industries, as well as work with partners to provide laboratory technologies, equipment and training specialists. “And that is why we also help our African partners through international organizations,” he concluded.
