Indian PM calls BRICS Summit productive

New Delhi, Oct 24 (Prensa Latina) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the 16th BRICS Summit, which took place in Kazan, Russia, as very productive, and appreciated the meetings he held with several world leaders.

In a comment on social media after his return to Delhi, the head of government also thanked President Vladimir Putin, the Russian people and government for their hospitality.

The Indian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that the dignitaries of the BRICS member nations held productive discussions on strengthening multilateralism, the fight against terrorism, promoting economic growth, seeking sustainable development and addressing the concerns of the Global South.

Speaking at the event, the Indian Prime Minister said there are high expectations of the positive role to be played by the BRICS as a diverse and inclusive platform in the face of current challenges for humanity, and called on the group to adopt a people-centered approach to address issues such as wars, economic uncertainty, climate change and terrorism. He also stressed the need for an early adoption of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations to combat this threat and called for taking into account the hopes, aspirations and expectations of countries in the Global South.

Modi stressed the need to prioritize small and medium-scale industries, and assured that the bloc’s startup forum, an Indian initiative to be launched this year, will add significant value to the BRICS economic agenda.

The head of government spoke with several of his peers from BRICS member countries and nations invited to the event. Among his meetings, the Indian press particularly highlights those held by the Prime Minister with President Vladimir Putin, with whom he reviewed an extensive agenda that included trade, economy, energy, defense, connectivity, education and ties between peoples.

The Indian PM and the Chinese president expressed their satisfaction with the recent agreement between the two countries for the complete disengagement and resolution of problems in the border territories, and agreed that stable, predictable and friendly bilateral relations between India and China will have a positive impact on regional and global peace and prosperity.
