Redondo commented on social media attitudes by Salazar and Gimenez, saying they conveniently forget Honduras’ recent history and some US sectors’ complicity with a real narco-government, such as that of former President Juan Orlando Hernandez.
The Honduran parliamentarian accused the South Florida congresspeople of making unfounded statements and making threats that he said were a blatant attempt to interfere in the country’s internal affairs.
“You are hypocrites using an ideological rhetoric to destabilize a democratically elected government,” Redondo said, reiterating that Honduras will not take lessons from those who remained silent in the face of real abuses in the past.
“We will defend our sovereignty with the same firmness with which we rejected the narco-government of former President Hernandez, we are not drug traffickers or corrupt people like those you have supported,” he stressed.
At a press briefing in South Florida on Monday, the two US lawmakers voiced concern about a possible return to power by the Liberty and Refoundation Party (LIBRE) in the upcoming presidential elections.
