The bloodshed occurred on October 3, as a response by the gang’s leader Luckson Élan to the US government’s sanctions, according to Free Haiti online publication.
Washington took issued warrants against Élan, his men and former deputy Prophane Victor, after they went into a armed rampage in Pont-Sondé, an area of the commune of Saint-Marc, in the Artiboniteen department.
Attackers set a number of local houses on fire at around 3:00 am that day.
The U.S. Treasury Department and the United Nations Sanctions Committee sanctioned them for committing serious human rights violations in Haiti and spreading gang violence all over it.
According to the United Nations (UN), the gang was formed almost 10 years ago, after former legislator Prophane Victor started to distribute weapons among youths to help him guarantee his election.
The UN claims Grand Grif is the largest and most powerful gang in Artibonite.
