Santiago de Chile, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will present at its headquarters in Chile the annual report on the outlook for international trade in the region for 2024.

In a press conference headed by the executive secretary of the organization, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, the reconfiguration of the exchange of goods and services at a global level and the options for the recovery of that activity in the region will be analyzed.

ECLAC will report on the performance of this sphere of the economy during the first half of this year and future projections until next December.

This new edition consists of three chapters. The first one analyzes the international situation and the expectation for trade at a global and regional level. The second one addresses the links between trade and food security in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the third one analyzes the potential of services to boost regional exports, a branch of the economy that has seen four consecutive years of growth.

ECLAC’s previous report, for 2023, showed that the volume of world trade in goods fell by 1.6 percent compared to the previous year.

This slowdown, the mechanism said, was a reflection of an adverse situation at the global level, marked by restrictive monetary policies in the United States and the European Union, as well as the real estate crisis in China.

The report reflected falls of 1.7 and -4.7 percent, respectively, in exports and imports of goods and, in contrast, growth in services to and from abroad.

According to the program released by ECLAC, the document will be available on the entity’s website once the presentation event is over.
