Cuba’s energy sector shows better prospects

Havana, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's energy sector is showing better prospects with the synchronization of the national electrical system and the incorporation of new generation units.

The director of Electric Energy of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Lázaro Guerra, explained through the national television system, that during the early hours of Wednesday, units 3 and 6 of the Renté thermoelectric plant should be incorporated, which will increase electricity coverage.

He also said that at 8:00 p.m. (local time) in Cuba there was a generation deficit of 833 megawatts, a situation that will improve with the entry into service of the units that are starting up, while there is fuel coverage for distributed generation, decreasing the number of power outages.

In further information on the TV, the head of the National Load Office of the Electric Union, Félix Estrada, said that the electrical system has experienced a significant improvement after the incorporation of five new generation units to the system, which has allowed the interconnection of the entire country. He also detailed that there are no longer “islands” or microsystems in the provinces connected to the system, since the availability of fuel is greater than before the contingency occurred nationwide.

Estrada specified that approximately 1,870 megawatts are currently being generated, but there is still a deficit of around 2,200, a situation similar to that which occurred in Cuba prior to the total collapse of the national electrical system. He also referred to the work of the linemen who support the recovery of the electrical networks after the passage of Hurricane Oscar through the eastern region of the country.
