In a press conference at the National Palace of Culture (headquarters of the Government), the president stressed that days ago, after more than two years in prison, journalist José Rubén Zamora was finally released.
“Yesterday I visited him at his home and we had an extensive conversation about the challenges we face today, which are great in deepening democracy, in protecting freedom of expression, and ultimately in recovering justice institutions,” he indicated.
The head of state stressed this point because of his administration’s commitments, citing Zamora as example, since the latter was a victim of undue persecution and arbitrary preventive detention.
The people of Guatemala are tired of these injustices and it is important that the judicial body, particularly under its new leadership, respond to the changes demanded, he said.
The 67-year-old politician expressed concern, especially about the history exposed by the Zamora family, connected to El Periódico, regarding the unlawful coercion and torture practices he suffered.
