Cuong was voted by 440 deputies who attended the plenary session, a figure that according to the Parliament’s website represents 91.67 percent of the total number of lawmakers.
General Luong Cuong, 67, has been a member of the CPV Central Committee since 2011 and a member of the Secretariat since 2016. In January 2021, he became a member of the Political Bureau and was elected deputy to the National Assembly.
Since May 2016 he served as director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People’s Army and chairman of the Inspection Committee of the Central Military Commission, in addition to being a member of the Central Steering Committee for Combating Corruption, of which he is currently vice chairman.
Immediately after the voting results were known, Cuong swore allegiance to the nation and pledged to strive to fully fulfill the tasks assigned by the CPV, the State and his compatriots.
He further stressed his readiness to build and promote the strength of great national unity and the building of a people’s rule of law that is pure, strong and truly socialist.
Luong Cuong assured that he would also work to strengthen national defense and security, build a revolutionary, regular, elite and modern armed force that is absolutely loyal and reliable, and consolidate in the hearts and minds of all people a posture of defense of the whole people.
He also reaffirmed his decision to consistently implement a foreign policy of independence, autonomy, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, multilateralism, diversification and proactive international integration, always looking after the highest national interests.
Vietnam is a friend, a reliable partner, an active and responsible member of the international community, he stressed before underscoring his readiness to resolutely and persistently protect national independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, maintaining a peaceful and stable environment to build and develop the country.
