Hurricane Oscar downgrades to tropical storm in eastern Cuba

Havana, Oct 21 (Prensa Latina) Hurricane Oscar, which is affecting the eastern provinces of Cuba, downgraded today to a tropical storm and its maximum sustained winds decreased to 85 kilometers per hour.

According to the Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology, tropical storm force winds will continue, which may reach speeds between 85 and 100 kilometers per hour with higher gusts.

Strong swells will continue to occur north of Guantanamo and Holguin, which will extend to the north coast of Las Tunas. Moderate to heavy coastal flooding will continue in low-lying areas of this coast, including the seawall of Baracoa.

The meteorological event will continue its slow movement towards the west-southwest and west while decreasing its intensity.

In Guantanamo, Holguin and Las Tunas continue to record rains, showers and thunderstorms, the latest report indicated.

Cuba is suffering the onslaught of the now tropical storm Oscar in the midst of a tense energy situation, caused by the disconnections of the National Electro-energetic System. Since the early hours of Monday power is being restored gradually all accross the island.
