The Sentence Court of Sensuntepeque, department of Cabañas, will release the ruling after a lengthy process that, according to the defense and community organizations, was rigged and conceals interests to renew metal mining in the country.
Social organizations that were close to the case demanded a “lawful” resolution during a press conference on Wednesday, when the ruling was announced.
The Association for Economic and Social Development (ADES) of Santa Marta expressed its support for the defendants and demanded that the trial be closed with a positive result, since, they stress, the community leaders are innocent.
We agree that the only verdict attached to legality, due process of law and the application of justice is the acquittal and immediate release of environmental defenders and that any other resolution would be gravely illegal and unjust, a statement said.
Despite the position of the prosecutors arguing the guilt of the defendants, the defence maintains that this entity did not present evidence incriminating the defendants.
