Ecuador’s government seeks to suspend telecommunications in prisons

Quito, Oct 17 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador's Interior and Telecommunications Ministries signed an agreement to eliminate the internet signal in the country's prisons, which have currently become the epicenter of the national security crisis.

Interior Minister Monica Palencia stated that the document, also signed by the Telecommunications Regulatory and Control Agency (ARCOTEL), aims to promote security and internal control in detention centers.

“Telecommunications must be used efficiently but not by organized crime,” the minister said.

The National Police stated last Tuesday that the Security Block raided the Litoral prison, finding prohibited items, such as firearms, ammunition, cell phones, and money.

More than 500 inmates were killed in clashes between rival gangs in Ecuadorian jails in 2021 and 2023.
