Colombian House of Representatives to resume debate on labor reform

Bogota, Oct 17 (Prensa Latina) The second debate of the labor reform proposed by the Colombian Government will resume today in the House of Representatives, after the bill witnessed the suppression of articles favorable to the rights of agricultural workers.

Articles 31, 32 and 33, which were intended to benefit farmers by offering formal contracts and wages, as well as housing, were written off in the previous session.

In a message in his X account, President Gustavo Petro slammed the move, which was given clearance with 82 votes in favor and 72 against.

“I do not understand how someone who earns 48 million pesos a month (about 12 thousand dollars at the current exchange rate), does not want a day laborer to earn a minimum wage.

“This is why we are one of the most unequal and violent countries in the world’, he wrote referring to the congressmen who voted to eliminate the aforementioned articles.

Senator from Historical Pact Clara Lopez recalled that the first debate of the bill close with the suppression of the clause booting the right to association, negotiation and strike.

“Now they are weakening farmers’ guarantees”, she argued

On the other hand, the representatives approved article 49, on the extension of paternity leave to four weeks, but eliminated article 50, which allowed same-sex adopting couples to determine one single time who between them would benefit from paternity or maternity leave.

The plenary of the House also gave the go ahead to articles 22 and 23 of the labor reform, which create a special labor contract for those attending the National Apprenticeship Service, granting them the benefits of formal worker.
