The National Federation of Secondary Education Teachers (FENAPES) began a 48-hour work strike on Tuesday, which included the occupation of five high schools in the capital by teachers and students.
On Wednesday, the Uruguayan Federation of Teachers-Primary Education Workers (FUM-TEP) will express its support for the measure, although primary school classes will continue in most of the country’s departments. However, the union of primary school teachers in Maldonado and Canelones decided to stop classes in rejection of budget cuts and the government’s educational reform.
In the capital, FENAPES and the PIT-CNT will lead a demonstration in the city centre in defense of labor and social demands, joined by other unions such as the Confederation of Industrial Unions and the Construction Union in defense of the achievements made in collective agreements, the protection of social funds and labor benefits, and in repudiation of job insecurity.
