DRC warns about eruption of Nyamulagira volcano

Kinshasa, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) Today, the Goma Volcano Observatory (GVO), in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), remains on yellow alert and vigilant for the eruption of the Nyamulagira volcano, located in the Virunga range.

Since Sunday night, October 13, activity began at this point and the day before the GVO confirmed in a statement that the volcano’s lava overflow is heading towards Virunga National Park.

However, experts say that Nyamulagira does not pose any immediate risk to the city of Goma, but remain vigilant given satellite imagery, which shows three different lava flows emerging from the crater, the most advanced of which has already entered the park about seven kilometres.

This is the second eruption at this point in less than two years and, according to Radio Okapi, it comes at a sensitive time for the Goma research facility, as some of the staff have been on strike for several weeks and only minimal service is being has been provided.
