During the meeting, the diplomat, after extending his government’s greetings, ratified Havana’s desire to strengthen the 65-year diplomatic ties between Sri Lanka and Cuba, the prime minister’s official website reported.
Both parties also analyzed the resumption of mosquito control projects implemented with Cuban aid, as well as the granting of scholarships in medical education and sports for personnel from training institutes and universities in Sri Lanka.
Earlier this month, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake received the Cuban ambassador and both discussed the possibility of strengthening cooperation in health matters.
The dialogue also focused on strengthening long-term diplomatic relations and the lasting friendship between the two countries.
The Sri Lankan president welcomed the Caribbean nation’s willingness to collaborate with Colombo to combat dengue in Sri Lanka, and its experience in strengthening public health initiatives aimed at eradicating the disease.
After his victory in the presidential elections, Dissanayake confirmed to his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel, his intention to work together for global peace and justice.
Sri Lanka and Cuba celebrate 65 years of diplomatic relations in 2024 with the aim of strengthening bilateral ties in various sectors beyond the distance that separates both nations.
