UN Security Council will review peace process in Colombia

United Nations, Oct 15 (Prensa Latina) The UN Security Council will meet to conduct the quarterly review of the path to complete peace in Colombia, which was presented by the organization's Verification Mission in the country.

The most recent report confirms important challenges to materialize the proposed goals, especially in relation to security in different localities.

Although it recognizes progress in the implementation of the Final Agreement, the review calls for redoubling efforts and maintaining a focus on the general objective: achieving peace for the good of millions of Colombians.

During the period analyzed – from June 27th to September 16th, 2024 – the Mission registered 33 reports of homicides against human rights defenders (nine verified, 15 in process of verification and nine inconclusive), which represents 22 less than in the previous quarter.

The report recognizes the progress that allows the establishment of special areas for collective reintegration. “These complementary measures should promote and contribute to the sustainability of the social, economic and political reintegration of ex-combatants, particularly those who participate in collective processes.” The information praised the efforts to accelerate the implementation of comprehensive rural reform, in particular, the positive trend in land formalization.

It was reportedly stated that 38 percent of the processes took place during the current administration, which constitutes a positive advance.

Other data presented assure that from 2017 to August 2024, 129,656 hectares were awarded, 86 percent of them during Gustavo Petro’s administration.
