Children become collateral victims in Uruguay drug shootings

Montevideo, Oct 15 (Prensa Latina) The death of a baby as a victim of cross fire among local drug traffickers in this capital's Cerro Norte neighborhood has brought to the limelight the collateral risks deriving from drug trade in Uruguay.

The baby and his mother were shot several times and hospitalized in serious condition, during an armed confrontation between gangs fighting over drug trafficking control.

Several candidates to the October 27 elections expressed dismay at the tragic event, and reiteraded their campaign promises regarding citizen safety.

Meanwhile, the “Caras y Caretas” magazine today recalled statements by Dr. Alvaro Galiana, director of the Pereira Rosell pediatric hospital, on the increase in the number of children arriving at the hospital with gunshot wounds. It is something that worries us a lot, he lamented’.

He also indicated that it requires the availability of a surgical block to immediately treat a patient who is generally a ‘child in serious condition”.
