Panamanian government to evaluate social security reform proposals

Panama City, Oct 14 (Prensa Latina) The Panamanian Government begins today the analysis of nine proposals from different sectors to face the current crisis of the state-owned Social Security Crisis (CSS).

According to the President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, the most recommended and viable actions to save the Disability, Old Age and Death (IVM) program, and medical benefits from the financial crisis, will be through a draft bill to be submitted to the National Assembly (parliament) for its evaluation and approval before the end of 2024.

Only the IVM program, in its exclusively defined benefit component, shows a deficit of more than 673 million dollars; and there are constant complaints from the population due to the surgical delays and the lack of medicines in the CSS assistance centers.

In this regard, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Panama (CCIAP) called on the Executive to evaluate each proposal with rigor, seriousness and, above all, with the approach of seeking the best for the country.

“This is not the time for cosmetic decisions or to impose wills by force or to fall into populist speeches”, the entity said in a statement signed by Juan Arias, president of the largest private business association in the country.
