Lebanon rejects Netanyahu’s statements on UN mission

Beirut, Oct 13 (Prensa Latina) Lebanon's interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati today rejected the demand of Israel's head of government, Benjamin Netanyahu, to withdraw the United Nations Interim Force (Unifil) from southern Lebanon.

In a statement on X Mikati wrote that Netanyahu was not pleased with the aggression against the country and insisted on showing his hostility towards the Unifil mission, deployed in the south since 1978.

The highest authority of the Executive condemned Netanyahu’s demand to UN Secretary General António Guterres to withdraw the peacekeeping force from the area of fighting on the southern border.

According to the head of the Lebanese government, the far-right leader’s demand represent a new chapter in the enemy’s attitude of disobeying international law and its relevant resolutions.

Mikati recalled that the Israeli premier rejected the call for a cease-fire by France and the United States, which was supported by Arab and European countries.

At the same time, he renewed Lebanon’s adherence to international law and to Resolution 1701, adopted by the UN Security Council in August 2006.

On this point, he stressed the commitment to the role of Unifil in the south and its positive cooperation with the army, and called on the international community to take a firm stance to stop Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

Unifil reported several incidents this week at the Naqoura barracks and its positions in Ramyah and Labbouneh, resulting in injuries to its personnel and material damage to the facilities.

Since the beginning of the “limited” Israeli ground offensive at the beginning of the month, the Lebanese Resistance (Hizbulah) emphasized that the Tel Aviv army is hiding behind Unifil positions and on unseen roads.

In its communiqués, the blue helmet contingent reminded all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety of UN personnel and facilities, including avoiding combat activities near Unifil locations.
