Housing project for single mothers begins in Mexico

Mexico City, Oct 13 (Prensa Latina) Baja California government, Mexico, started the Vivienda Violeta (Violet Housing) project for single mothers in vulnerable situations, local media reported today.

Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila announced that 9,000 houses will be offered on credit in Mexicali, with no down payment, a monthly payment of 3,900 Mexican pesos (around 202 US dollars) at no interest, according to La Jornada newspaper.

The benefit is for heads of household with income, who must sign a contract with the Housing Institute.

One of the purposes is to recover 12,000 abandoned properties, which were assigned to the Instituto del Fondo Nacional de la Vivienda para los Trabajadores (National Workers’ Housing Fund Institute).

Some 16,000 social housing units were built as part of the State Housing Program, half of which have already been handed over.
