Guatemalan asks to review the current mechanism to elect the Courts

Guatemala City, Oct 13 (Prensa Latina) Religious organizations in Guatemala have asked to review and modify the election of members to the Supreme Court of Justice and the Court of Appeals, on the occasion of today's swearing in of the new magistrates.

Through a statement, they pointed out that in the last days, both the candidates and Congress, did not establish processes to select the best profiles, “but rather they negotiated and agreed, according to their interests or the interests they represent”.

“Unfortunately they let too many candidates out”, and emphasized that their trajectory, capacity and suitability were not studied in depth,” Amerindia Guatemala, the Association of Theologians of the nation, the Christian Ecumenical Council, the School of Theology and Pastoral Monsignor Gerardi pointed out.

Likewise, they did not take into account the objections and arguments of the population, observers and experts, the organizations stressed.

They considered that the success of the mechanism cannot be measured only by the compliance with the terms of the law and demanded that the new members of the Judicial Branch do their job with ethics and independence in order to recover the credibility of the system.

They also demanded that the high courts stop using justice to repress and silence those who denounce, investigate or judge corruption.

This Sunday, the Guatemalan Congress will swear in the head of the CSJ for the 2019-2024 term in solemn session, with the presence of President Bernardo Arévalo.
