Sheldon Yett, Unicef representative in Sudan, told local media that children did not start this war, but they are the ones who are really suffering and are the victims.
Yett denounced the effects of armed violence on children, as well as the closure of schools and health centers.
He also referred to the efforts being made by Unicef to stop the spread of infectious diseases and the obstacles faced by humanitarian workers in reaching those in need.
Finally, Yett also raised alarms that Sudan is the biggest child emergency today and spoke about the long-term effects of the war on children.
Since mid-April last year, the nation has been involved in an internal war, after power struggles flared up between army chief Abdel Fatah al-Burhan and the leader of the paramilitary RSF, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
In Sudan, where a military coup d’état occurred in 2019 and another in 2021, a conflict broke out in which thousands of civilians were killed, including some 15,000 in the West Darfur region alone.
