Moscow demands to avoid any hostile action against the Unifil peacekeepers carrying out their mission in Lebanon, in keeping with the existing mandate of the UN Security Council, while expressing support for them and wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded, said the note.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also indicated that Unifil itself has described these attacks as ‘deliberate’, considering them a serious violation of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Yesterday, Unifil denounced Israeli gunfire at an observation tower of its headquarters in the city of Naqoura, which was knocked down and also left two wounded.
The organization, led by Spanish Lieutenant General Aroldo Lázaro Saenz, is made up of more than 10,000 troops from 50 countries, including Argentina, Colombia, Spain, Guatemala, Peru, El Salvador and Uruguay. The largest contingents in the force are those from Indonesia (1,231), Italy (1,688) and India (903).
Early in October, the Israeli army crossed the so-called Blue Line, eventually engaging the Hezbollam militia in southern Lebanese territory.
This organization, together with the Palestinian Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip, the Houthi forces of the Ansar Allah movement in Yemen and the pro-Iranian militias in Iraq and Syria, is part of the so-called ‘axis of resistance’ against the Hebrew state in the Middle East.
