Martinique declares curfew as protests intensify

Fort-de-France, Oct 11 (Prensa Latina) Martinique declared a curfew on Friday as local authorities try to quell popular protests over the high cost of living, in which one person was killed.

The measure will be extended daily until Monday, October 14, from 21:00 hours, local time, to 05:00 hours, local time, and includes a ban on the island’s inhabitants walking in the streets, gathering, holding rallies, or staying in public places.

The purchase, sale, and transport of fuels, and fireworks are also banned during this period. The police are patrolling and imposing severe penalties on offenders. The local government justified the emergency measure to ensure the safety of Martinique’s property and population but threatened to extend it if necessary.

Protests intensified from Wednesday to Thursday in this nation, where at least one person was shot dead and 12 others were injured in violent clashes between demonstrators and police.
