According to the media, the port authorities of Heraklion received information from the Coast Guard’s Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center regarding the existence of a boat with foreigners in danger at sea, 39 nautical miles south of Crete.
As a result, a boat with rescuers immediately arrived at the scene and found 53 illegal immigrants, who were taken to the port of Kalon Limenon.
According to the information released, the immigrants left for Greece on August 10 from the coast of Libya.
In parallel, the Heraklion port administration is conducting a preliminary investigation into the incident.
In addition, authorities have identified and arrested a 20-year-old migrant smuggler who faces criminal charges.
