UN hails World Post Day and the right to communicate

United Nations, 9 Oct (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary General, António Guterres, welcomed World Post Day as an opportunity to connect communities and defend the fundamental right to communicate.

The date this year coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, which Guterres deemed as a historic milestone.

That organization, he said, is also one of the first examples of multilateralism in action.

“Global cooperation helped to ensure a single postal territory around the world, one that leaves no one behind in delivering messages, goods and financial services to some of the most remote places on the planet,” Guterres acknowledged.

Looking ahead, the Union continues to harness new technologies to provide essential services to humanity, he added.

World Post Day coincides with the anniversary of the establishment of the Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss capital, Bern.

The date was declared international by the Congress of that organization held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969.

Since then, countries from all over the world join the celebrations every year, and post offices in many countries avail of the opportunity to introduce or promote new postal products and services.
