Sri Lanka to seek BRICS membership at upcoming summit in Russia

Colombo, Oct 9 (Prensa Latina) Sri Lanka will pursue membership in the expansion of the BRICS Group at the bloc's summit in Russia later this month, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath informed on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters, Herath, who is also the Cabinet Spokesperson, said joining BRICS would be beneficial for Sri Lanka.

He stated that he would represent Colombo with a team of officials at the event to be held in Kazan on October 22-24 and formally seek membership in that Group.

Herath explained that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had been invited to attend the summit. He would be unable to do so due to domestic commitments.

He noted that Sri Lanka plans to reach out to the foreign ministers of all BRICS nations for support.

The group, now called BRICS+, comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa in 2010, as an alternative international space to the Group of Seven (G-7) industrialized nations.

Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Iran joined the bloc in 2024.
