Nigerien authorities update death toll due to rains

Niamey, Oct 9 (Prensa Latina) Nigerian authorities reported a balance of the damage caused by heavy rains that have already left 339 people deaths and more than one million displaced since June, it was known here today.

According to official sources, more than 1.1 million people have been affected by the floods since September 23.

The Nigerien civil protection service said that the entire territory of the country was damaged, including the capital Niamey, where nine people died.

The floods also reportedly caused heavy losses in livestock and agriculture.

Education authorities were forced to postpone the start of the school year to the end of October, due to the damages in schools and the number of displaced families.

The head of Niger’s ruling military junta, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, recently gave instructions to prepare an aid budget and decided that the financing of the management will be essentially ensured by own resources, so the government allocated some 18.3 million euros to deal with the situation.

The rainy season in Niger runs from June to September.

“According to the Niger news agency ANP, in 2022, over 190 deaths and approximately 250,000 people were affected by floods. Last year, the floods resulted in around 50 deaths and impacted 176,000 people.”
