During a questioning of Interior Minister Nicolas Martinelli, by the Broad Front (Frente Amplio-FA), the Parliament did not succeed in declaring a state of emergency in Uruguay’s prisons.
In a session of the Permanent Commission of the Legislature, the parliamentarians voted together a motion to support the minister.
Martinelli had to respond to the deaths of six inmates in the Santiago Vazquez jail, formerly Comcar, in an arson attack, as well as to public denunciations of the entry of minors to visit sex offenders at Punta del Rieles prison.
The FA supported some of the articles of the motion and proposed the creation of an inter-institutional group to work on this issue, but the initiative did not succeed.
