2024 considered in Ecuador second year with most homicides

Quito, Oct 7 (Prensa Latina) This 2024 is already the second most violent year in the history of Ecuador, with 4,805 homicides registered until September, local media warn today.

That number of murders was only surpassed in 2023, when there were 8,088 violent deaths in the national territory, according to a report by Radio Pichincha station.

The Interior Minister, Monica Palencia, assured that there is an 18 percent reduction of intentional homicides in the last nine months compared to the same period of the previous year, that is, 1,48 murders less.

However, violent incidents continue in this South American nation despite these data and the renewed state of exception decree for the provinces and municipalities with the highest levels of insecurity.

This Saturday, for example, the National Police confirmed a bomb attack in the city of Machala, in the southern province of El Oro, which left two dead, an equal number of wounded and five houses destroyed.

The persistent security crisis is one of the reasons for the political trial against Palencia in the National Assembly (Parliament), where this Monday the Supervision Commission will issue a report in which it will recommend or not the minister’s impeachment.

Since January of this year, the declaration of internal armed conflict has been in force in Ecuador, a provision with which the president, Daniel Noboa, protects decisions in order to curb insecurity and organized crime.

Citizens demand comprehensive actions by the Executive, since violent acts persist in the streets despite the presence of soldiers and the constant states of emergency.
