DRC province stars vaccination campaign against Mpox

Kinshasa, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) The province of North Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), launched the vaccination campaign against smallpox (Mpox) to immunize about 48,000 people, Radio Okapi reported on Sunday.

On Saturday, local authorities attended the official launching ceremony of the vaccination campaign’s first phase in the city of Goma. Radio Okapi informed that the campaign will first focus on the most affected areas of the province, such as the capital Goma, Karisimbi and Nyiragongo, and will be conducted from October 7 to 10, targeting the most vulnerable groups, such as healthcare workers and war displaced people.

Other population groups to be prioritized are butchers, sex workers, as well as agents at entry and control points and veterinarians.

According to the vaccination schedule, two doses are foreseen for adults, while children under 18 years old will only receive one dose.

The beginning of the campaign against Mpox was scheduled for October 2, but difficulties with the logistic chain forced to postpone it to October 5.
