Panamanian union leader condemns US blockade against Cuba

Panama, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) The general secretary of the Authentic Federation of Workers (FAT) of Panama, Alberto Reyes, condemned the blockade that the United States has imposed on Cuba for more than six decades.

In a message on his X profile on Friday, Reyes stated that the empire and its lackeys intend to suffocate the people of the sister Republic of Cuba with the economic, commercial and financial siege, a criminal and inhuman measure.

In that regard, Reyes called for solidarity to demand the end of this hostile policy, which has been promoted by several US administrations and violates fundamental rights of the Cuban population, a universal demand that will return to the plenary session of the United Nations General Assembly in late October.

In September, when explaining to the press in Havana the report “Necessity to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez stated that it is the most ruthless, comprehensive and prolonged economic war policy ever imposed on any country.

The document states that as a result of this policy, Cuba has reported losses of 5.056 billion dollars from March 1, 2023, to February 29, 2024, which represents an increase of almost 200 million dollars compared to the previous report.

The diplomat asserted that the approximate impact is more than 421 million dollars per month, or 13.8 million dollars per day, and pointed out that in six decades, these impacts rose to 1.499 trillion dollars.

Had such a policy not existed, Cuba’s Gross Domestic Product might have grown by eight percent in 2023, he stressed.
