The secretary of information of the MPLA Political Bureau, Esteves Hilário, told reporters on Friday that the meeting, scheduled for December, does not include the election of a new president of the party.
After an extraordinary meeting of the Political Bureau, at which they approved the documents related to the Congress, Hilário explained that as announced in its call, the meeting will focus on an exhaustive analysis of half century of national independence.
“There is no renewal of mandates, nor candidacies for the position of MPLA president,” the secretary stressed.
The issue has been a source of speculation since before the announcement of the Congress, due to the implications it has with a view to the 2027 presidential elections and the possible candidate of the ruling MPLA.
The Political Bureau met on Friday under the leadership of MPLA President João Lourenço, and the approved documents will be presented on October 9 at the 3rd Extraordinary Meeting of the Central Committee, Hilário told the press.
