UN Human Rights Office demands that Israel stop bombing shelters

United Nations, Oct 4 (Prensa Latina) The UN Human Rights Office called for an end to Israeli bombings of shelters in Gaza, as its offensive in the region has claimed thousands of lives in recent weeks.

A statement from the organization demanded that the Israeli Defense Forces stop the pattern of attacks against buildings sheltering civilians in the Strip, considering them to be “an almost daily occurrence.”

According to the Office, in the last 72 hours, at least six schools used as shelters were attacked, with dozens of fatalities, including children and women. Last September, at least 14 schools were targeted by Israel forces, while in August there was an attack on a school every two days.

“Regardless of whether Palestinian armed groups were present in these facilities, the resulting high rate of civilian casualties makes it difficult to conceive that these attacks are proportionate according to the principles of international humanitarian law,” the institution said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) condemned Tel Aviv’s attacks against health personnel in Lebanon, where 28 humanitarian workers were killed in the last day. “Workers, including those from WHO, have done an incredible task in very difficult and dangerous conditions, with limited supplies, and yet, health care continues to be targeted,” lamented the head of the agency, Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus.

According to WHO, at least 37 health centers have closed in the country since the escalation began, while another three in Beirut had to be evacuated.

More than 1,600 people have become victims of Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon and more than a million have been displaced, including 350,000 living in shelters and 160,000 who have crossed the border into Syria, according to UN estimates.
