Category 4 hurricane Kirk moves across the Atlantic

Washington, Oct 4 (Prensa Latina) Category 4 Hurricane Kirk is moving across the Atlantic today with maximum sustained winds of 230 kilometers per hour (km/h), while tropical storm Leslie advances westward and could strengthen in the coming hours.

This was announced by the National Hurricane Center in two bulletins on these systems, which are circulating in the open Atlantic.

The eye of Hurricane Kirk was located near latitude 22.3 north, longitude 48.1 west. Kirk is moving northwestward at about 17 km/h, and is expected to continue this general motion and with faster speed through the weekend.

The report notes that although Kirk is expected to turn a curve over the open Atlantic, its strong intensity and increasing size will result in large storm surges that will propagate away from the hurricane. These surges will increase the risk of dangerous waves and rip currents across the Leeward Islands starting later today; Bermuda and the Greater Antilles on Saturday; much of the U.S. East Coast, Canada and the Bahamas on Sunday, and the Azores on Monday.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Leslie is advancing westward at 9 km/h and is expected to turn west-northwestward later today, followed by a turn to the northwest and an increase in forward speed early Sunday.

Its maximum sustained winds have increased to near 95 km/h with stronger gusts, and its forecast is to strengthen further and become a hurricane on Saturday.
