In remarks to the press, the national director of epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health, Francisco Duran, explained that more than 89% of the pediatric population expected to be immunized with the Pneumococcal vaccine Pneumosil 10 was administered the vaccine.
He detailed that, except for the provinces of Cienfuegos, Holguin, Guantanamo, Granma and Pinar del Rio, the others have closed this first phase with more than 90% of children vaccinated, Granma newspaper reported.
He recalled that the vaccination schedule for Pneumosil 10 began with this first dose for children born between January 1st and June 30th, 2024, and those born in July who, at the date of delivery of the immunizer, would have already reached two months of age.
The second dose will be administered after two months of the first, and seven months after this, a third booster dose will be provided.
The Pneumosil 10 vaccine protects against the 10 serotypes of pneumococci with the highest circulation, which can produce severe symptoms of the disease, such as acute meningitis, pneumonia or sepsis (infection in the blood).
This campaign, which has been developed in 670 vaccination centers certified by the National Immunization Program of the Ministry of Health, has been possible with the support of the Global Alliance of Vaccines and the Pan American Health Organization. jrr/arm/mem/alb
