Cuban doctors hold Scientific Conference in Guatemala

Guatemala City, Oct 3 (Prensa Latina) Cuban doctors in Guatemala will wind up today their last session of scientific discussions, as part of their 2nd International Scientific Conference, thus demonstrating that they can both attend to patients and simultaneously carry out research.

Several groups from distant communities have been arriving in this capital for the last three days of the event, 83 of them as speakers and writers of 42 papers, the highest number for the Cuban medical brigades around the world.

Organized by the Central Unit of Cuban Medical Cooperation, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Thursday, the forum dealt with issues doctors encounter in their daily work and which require a detailed and deep analysis.

In the first day, doctors Guillermo Triana and Ana Luisa Quevedo shed some light on the prevalence of dengue in the department of Baja Verapaz, in the years 2022 and 2023.

Hailing from the same department, Dr. Arsenio Hermes Sablon gave an educational lecture for diabetic patients to better care of their disease, Salacuim.

The presentations were attended and supported by the Cuban Ambassador to Guatemala, Nazario Fernandez, the brigade’s coordinator Mariheta Cutiño, and authorities in charge of the health sector of this country.

Escuintla, Jalapa, Jutiapa, Nebaj, Poptun, Huehuetenango, Quetzaltenango, San Juan Sacatepequez, San Marcos, San Pedro, Santa Rosa, Suchitepequez, Peten, Sayaxche, Totonicapan, Uspantan and Zacapa have been some of the places represented.

Guatemalans from those places are familiar with the presence of Cuban doctors in remote villages and communities, where they have had to adapt to the heights, the dust, the tremors, the intense cold or the extreme heat, as well as to different languages and customs.
