Colombia to join China’s Belt and Road initiative

Bogotá, Oct 3 (Prensa Latina) Colombia will join China's Belt and Road initiative to strengthen the political and commercial ties that already unite both nations, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Jorge Rojas.

On the occasion of the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China, held at the residence of Ambassador Zhu Jingyang, the diplomat also announced the visit of Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo to China this month, and recalled that the ties between both states are already a Strategic Association as agreed by Presidents Xi Jinping and Gustavo Petro, when the latter visited Beijing a year ago.

The Chinese ambassador in Bogotá took advantage of the ceremony to explain to those present the achievements of China in recent decades. China is currently the second largest economy in the world and is consolidating its position as a technological power in the manufacture of electric cars. It also holds the first place in exports in this area and in space robotics, having launched an unmanned mission that aims to bring back samples from the dark side of the Moon, he said. He also praised the increase in commercial ties with Colombia and highlighted the potential still existing in this area.

According to Zhu Jingyang, trade between China and Colombia currently exceeds eight billion dollars, while Colombia has sold products to China worth 2.9 billion dollars.

The Chinese functionary also mentioned that next year both States will celebrate 45 years of their relations and the first decade of the association between China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

China’s Belt and Road Initiative, launched in 2013, involves numerous physical development and financial investment projects, ranging from building railways to satellite networks to boost trade and connectivity with countries in nearly every region of the world.
