Uruguayan high school teachers stage strike

Montevideo, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay's National High School Teachers Federation (FENAPES) is staging a 48-hour strike in high schools on Tuesday demanding labor rights.

The educational centers will be without classes and teachers will mobilize on Tuesday and Wednesday against decisions of the educational authorities, which affect education and the teachers’ working conditions.

Emilio Mandacen, leader of FENAPES, said the union’s assembly had decided to strike in light of the position of the National Public Education Administration (ANEP), amid negotiations between the parties.

The strikes in the public and private educational sectors are a recurring theme in Uruguay, both for labor demands, against the violence affecting the sector, and rejecting the educational reform promoted and approved by the Government.
