Southeast U.S. grapples with effects of Helene: death toll rises

Washington, Sept 30 (Latin Press) The Southeast U.S. continues to grapple with widespread devastation, four days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida and caused at least 93 deaths, according to updated data.

In addition, the weather event left just over two million customers without power in the six affected states: South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, and trapped hundreds of people in the floodwaters.

The hydro-meteorological phenomenon hit Florida with category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale of up to five and winds of up to 225 kilometers per hour.

“The sad thing is that the country as a whole is not prepared for disasters and emergencies” and “people don’t believe there is a climate crisis,” were two random comments picked up by Prensa Latina.

According to experts, Helene is the strongest hurricane recorded in the Big Bend region, informal name for the curve of the Florida peninsula that surrounds the Gulf of Mexico, Jefferson and three other counties of the Sunshine State: Taylor, Dixie and Levy.

Of the total deaths, North Carolina has the worst statistic (36) and towns like Boone were completely submerged.
