Haiti plans vaccination campaign against animal rabies

Port-au-Prince, Sep 30 (Prensa Latina ) The ministries of Public Health and Population and Agriculture of Haiti, plan to carry out a vaccination campaign against animal rabies, a disease considered here today of little impact, but should be eliminated by 2030.

This effort will be supported by the Pan American and the World Health Organizations, to immunize 400,000 dogs in three departments of the Haiti.

Fritzner Supreme, chief of epidemiology and head of the rabies laboratory in the Centro department, reveals that during this week 10 cases of animal rabies were registered.

Rabies is one of the diseases, within the zoonosis category, transmissible from animals to humans. It is considered dangerous because it is a lethal pathology.

According to specialized literature, it can endanger the health not only of pets, but also of household members.

It is an infectious disease that acts on the central nervous system and affects practically all mammals.

The disease is caused by the Rhabdoviridae virus and has a very high lethality rate of almost 100 percent, except in exceptional cases.
