Antimicrobial resistance, growing threat to be discussed at the UN

United Nations, Sep 16 (Prensa Latina) A debate on the risks posed by antimicrobial resistance will present an opportunity to curb this growing threat during the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting will serve as a basis for implementing policies and ensuring accountability to strengthen health systems and protect global health.

This will be the second high-level meeting on resilience organized by the United Nations, after world leaders in 2016 pledged to act in a collective effort to address this challenge to health, food security and development.

The 2024 edition will also urge decisive action by warning of the risk faced by low- and middle-income countries.

Resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites do not respond to drugs, which increases the spread of “difficult-to-treat” infections and can lead to illness and death.

Ahead of the meeting, Malta and Barbados jointly facilitated intergovernmental negotiations for a declaration to be considered by leaders on Thursday.
