Heavy rains in Japan claim lives of eight people

Tokyo, Sep 25 (Prensa Latina) The number of deaths in Japan as a result of unprecedented rains in Ishikawa prefecture, in the center of the island of Honshu, rose today to eight, while two people are still missing.

According to police reports, the causes of death are mostly due to washouts from swollen rivers, landslides and house collapses.

The Japan Meteorological Agency estimated that in the city of Wajima more than 498 millimeters of rain fell in 48 hours (record amount) on September 20 and 21, and in the city of Suzu it registered 393 millimeters, twice the monthly norm for September.

As a result of landslides and other phenomena caused by the rains, in Ishikawa prefecture, 115 villages were inaccessible, 46 towns faced communications cuts and more than 5,000 households lost water service due to a series of damages in the pipelines.

Among the most affected areas are the village of Noto and the cities of Wajima and Suzu.

Over the weekend, authorities in Ishikawa, located on the coast of the Sea of Japan, had to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people in towns and villages in that prefecture.

This part of Japan will take some time to recover from the consequences of the heavy rainfall.
