Uruguayans believe cash money has little time left

Montevideo, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) Cash money could have little time left in Uruguay, according to the results of a study released here today.

Around 50 percent of Uruguayans believe that cash will disappear within the next decade in the national territory, after the use of banknotes fell by more than 44 percent over the last five years.

These are data from the Fiserv report entitled “Numbers that Speak”, which show that most citizens prefer to use debit or credit cards as a means of payment to the detriment of cash.

The decrease in the use of banknotes in recent years responds to a growing adoption of digital methods by the population, the report says.

It states that the preference for debit cards reaches 60 percent of the population.

And although physical money continues as the second preferred means of payment with 16 percent, it is notorious its fall compared to previous years.

Fifty-five percent of those surveyed said it would be “easy” or “very easy” to abandon the use of cash.

In addition, 60 percent of Uruguayans use their cell phones for virtual payments, reported the digital media Ámbito.
